the weaving
Una unica tela a trama larga, una armatura tela di circa 5 x 5 fili/cm, costituisce il supporto del dipinto. La crettatura mette in evidenza la tessitura: si tratta di una tipica tela seicentesca, detta anche ‘tela napoletana’.
The support is a single piece of plain weave canvas with a thread count of approximately 5 x 5 threads/cm. The weaving is highlighted by the cracks on the surface. It is a very typical 17 th century canvas, also called ‘Neapolitan canvas’.
the ‘mestica’
Artemisia ha impiegato una preparazione bruna, in due strati, costituiti da terre e quarzo. È una cosiddetta ‘mestica’, tipica del Seicento italiano.
As for the ground, Artemisia used a brown-coloured mixture of earths and quartz, in two layers. It is the so-called ‘mestica’, characteristic of Seicento Italian paintings.
a naturalistic effect
Il tono bruno della preparazione emerge lungo il profilo della mano. Questo utilizzo ‘en reserve’ conferisce un effetto naturalistico, ottenendo contorni non lineari e netti.
The brown colour of the ground is clearly visible on the surface, along the profile of the hand. It is used ‘en reserve’, to obtain a naturalistic effect, avoiding sharp contours.
the underdrawing
In riflettografia infrarossa sono visibili le larghe pennellate scure del disegno soggiacente, rapido e sintetico.
Large dark brushstrokes of underdrawing are visible along the contours of the ‘putto’ in the infrared reflectograhy. It’s a dynamic and sketchy drawing.
the X-ray
La radiografia mostra l’assenza di modifiche compositive. Sono invece presenti numerose sovrapposizioni di stesure pittoriche dei panneggi sugli incarnati. Il chiaroscuro ha una resa morbida e delicata, nonostante la tecnica pittorica sia veloce e condotta con sintesi di mezzi.
The X-rays show that the composition is built up without compositional changes. Several superimposition of paint layers are visible in the drapery of “Aurora”. The chiaroscuro in the flesh looks soft even if the painting technique is confident and synthetic.
the painting technique
Artemisia impiega il tono bruno della preparazione, leggermente velato, per l’ottenimento delle ombre. I chiari sono ottenuti con dense pennellate di biacca sovrapposte, che conferiscono un forte effetto volumetrico. La tecnica dei panneggi privilegia singole pennellate che emergono dal fondo e descrivono le forme.
Artemisia uses the brown colour of the ground for the deep shadows, only slightly veiled. The light values are obtained with dense brushstrokes of lead white, superimposed to give the strong effect of the volume. The painting technique of the drapery builts on single brushstrokes which emerge from the ground describing the shapes.
